Paramedic hit, killed on San Diego freeway

A paramedic setting up flares around a car crash on the winding Cabrillo Freeway was struck and killed this morning, a fire department spokesman said.

The San Diego Medical Services paramedic was struck on the northbound side of Route 163, near Washington Street, around 7 a.m., Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, told The San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego Medical Services is a private company that contracts with the city for emergency services.
