The Pirates acquired relief pitcher Sean Gallagher from the San Diego Padres in exchange for cash on Wednesday.
Gallagher, a right-hander, had a 5.40 ERA in 15 games before the Padres designated him for assignment July 1.
The 24-year-old Gallagher struck out 21 batters and walked 19 in 23 1/3 innings of work.
