Heavy rain severely eroded soil under train tracks in northern San Diego, canceling Amtrak and commuter rail service at least through Christmas weekend.
North County Transit District spokesman Alex Wiggins said Thursday that the erosion runs about mile, near San Diego’s Sorrento Valley station. The soil is completely gone under sections running 50 to 75 feet, leaving the track hanging in midair.
The transit district has ordered 2,000 tons of gravel to reinforce the track.
