San Diego police say an officer has shot and critically wounded a man who pointed a fake gun at him during a chase.
Twenty-two-year-old Robert McBride Jr. is hospitalized but is expected to survive.
Police Lt. Kevin Rooney tells the San Diego Union-Tribune that a sergeant was patrolling at a Mira Mesa shopping center around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when he saw two men walking near some parked cars and thought they might be car burglars.
Rooney says he followed the men and one went into a pharmacy.
The sergeant stopped the other man, who handed the officer his wallet and then ran.
Rooney says during the chase, the man turned and pulled what appeared to be a gun and the officer shot him.
Rooney says the gun was a plastic replica.
