San Diego hospital repairs leg after taxi wreck

Surgeons operated Monday on a 45-year-old mother whose leg was severely damaged when a taxi pinned against a wall outside a crowded downtown nightclub.

Dominique Gambale is expected to walk again but her right leg will not regain its full function or appearance, said Dr. Paul Girard, an orthopedic surgeon at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. She is eating, talking and sitting up in bed.

“Her prognosis is good,” Girard said. “It’s a little bit guarded. There are more hurdles that she has to clear and more surgeries that she has to have in the next week to two weeks.”

Doctors removed damaged tissues and realigned her limb Monday and were expected to operate again on Thursday, Girard said.
