The San Diego City Council has repealed an ordinance that strictly regulated construction of Walmart Supercenters in the nation’s eighth-largest city.
President Tony Young had a change of heart and joined a 7-1 majority Tuesday, saying he didn’t want to force taxpayers to pay for a special election that would cost up to $3.4 million. He voted for the ordinance less than two months ago, overriding Mayor Jerry Sanders’ veto.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said last week that it plans to build 12 stores in San Diego over the next five years, and the company gathered enough signatures to put a measure on the ballot asking voters to repeal the ordinance.
